Kenny Poole Has to Cancel Gig with Gene Bertoncinni

Due to a little relapse in Kenny Poole’s bout with cancer, he is being forced to bow out of his gig with Gene Bertoncinni tomorrow evening at the Blue Wisp Jazz Club in Cincinnati , Ohio .  Kenny was really looking forward to jamming up some great stuff with his old buddy and co-star of his CD entitled, East Meets MidWest   but, his energy level just isn’t “playing along.”  He sends his apologies to all that were looking forward to seeing him play with Gene, but he strongly suggests that we all still go because Gene Bertoncinni is “one of the finest guitarists I’ve ever known.”  (http://www.bluewispjazzclub.com/

Our Good Friend George Castle Passes Away

(George on the right talking to Richard Smith)

It is with a heavy heart that I make our club membership aware of the passing of this truly great Chet Atkins fan and a big supporter of both CAAS and our OFGC organizations.  George and his beautiful wife, Marion, (of whom he spoke of so fondly and so often) of many years both had been struggling with health issues over the past several years - God called them both home within a few days of each other last week.  May they rest in peace and have eternal life.

George was in his 80’s when he started driving all the way down to Columbus from his home in Gladwin , Michigan for many of our Pickin’ Parties.  He’d come with Bob Greenwood when Bob could make it – but, he made that 6 to 7 hour drive all alone many times.  And, I’m sure many of you who had complained to me over the years that you were “gittin’ too old” to come to our Parties, or “had to drive too far” to get here, had heard me talk about George’s energy and love for thumb style guitar.

The interstellar Chet Atkins Fan Club has just lost a true martyr.  I never saw George reach for a guitar.  I never heard George talk about playing a guitar.  I never heard George talk about “who he knew.”  But, every year I’d see George Castle at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society convention with his captain’s cap and video camera rolling 14 hours a day.  And, every once in a while I’d get an unexpected phone call the Friday evening before one of our OFGC Pickin’ Parties from George at the local Columbus Microtel Inn, “Hey, anything goin’ on, tonight??”  He was always supportive of our club activities and always ready to “go hear some pickin’…   We’ll miss you, George…

Keep on pickin,

Palmer Moore – Organizer
