I can't believe that we almost missed this
wonderful workshop (of sorts) that Buster B. Jones put on last night at
Lang's Music in Eastland Plaza here in Columbus, Ohio. Me being
me, however, I had to get some hide from somebody for the event not
showing up on either Buster's or Godin's web sites - but, the very nice
folks at Lang's got me back by suggesting that it had been headlined all
along on their web site. We will be adding Lang, Godin and Buster
to our hot club hotlinks today.
Even if one was not aware of Buster's recent bout with
health problems where his corrective operation left him partially
paralyzed in his left hand (can you pickers imagine - ouch) and
leg - you would classify him as one of the fastest finger pickers alive
- and, one of the funniest. However, he did apologize for not
being as fast or accurate as he once was. Nobody that was there
could tell he was slower, or did they much care - he was on fire just
the same. In fact, I kind of agree with his good old buddy Thom
Bresh who Buster quoted teasing him recently, "Now, (with his
reduced speed) we can understand what yer playin'."
Buster's claim to fame is his lighting speed Jerry
Reed claw like licks that he has embellished greatly over the years that
he has grown musically - which he primarily plays on nylon stringed
guitars - Godin nylon stringed guitars. Even when he's playing
mellow pretty tunes, you always expect to hear him break into his wild
claw style full of hammers, lift-offs, open stranged arpeggios,
etc. And, last night was no different - which is a major tribute
to the tenacity and love the man has for his guitar - in that just a few
months ago he couldn't form a basic D chord. He's fought himself
back, folks - better than ever.
Many thanks to Godin Guitars and Lang Music for
bringing us such great musical talent right here in Ohio.
