Ohio Fingerstyle Guitar Club e-Newsletter - Feb 23, 2007 Hello I hope everybody has kept their driveways plowed out the last few weeks - WHILE I'VE BEEN IN FLORIDA... (sorry - lol) however, I think it might be over.. (lol) We've had another little lull in the Pickin' Party action since our Christmas Party, but we are going to be having a Pickin' Party on Saturday, March 10th with the fabulous Richard Smith as our Guest Picker that should be a blast. Our own Pete Cavano will be leading off for Richard and the amazing violinist Arkadiy Gips will join Richard and Pete in a Hot Club of Ohio grand finale of some great Django Reinhardt style gypsy jazz..
Guest Picker: Richard & Julie Smith Opening Picker: Pete Cavano Accompanying Violinist: Arcadiy Gips Where: Griswold Center, 777 High Street, Worthington, OH When: Saturday, March 10th, 2007 - 11am until 7 pm Cost: Donation of $10 appreciated For those of you that don't already know - Richard Smith is one of the three best finger style guitar players in the world. He has been our Guest Picker many times over the last 4 or 5 years and continues to amaze us each time he is here. His wife, Julie, will join him in an opening set and then he will do a set solo. As a special treat Richard will then be joined by Pete Cavano and Arcadiy Gips to play a short set of standard gypsy jazz selections. You just won't be able to see this level of talent on any stage in Ohio in the near future, so I hope you will all do your best to get out to this Pickin' Party. Private areas will be available for personal conversations and/or jams... Bring your guitars and amps as we will be having a club jam after the concert...
Merle Travis Tribute - There isn't an official web site for Merle, so we at least put up a page where we can list places on the net to find information about one of our club heroes. If anybody has anything to add, please let us know at "Say Hello".. "For Sale" - A page for OFGC members to list personal guitar equipment they would like to sell. Make a Donation to OFGC - The club has been limping along pretty good living from Pickin' Party to Pickin' Party, however there are expenses that don't get covered when our attendances are as low as they have been, lately: annual web site subscription services, e-mailing costs, Hall of Fame plaques, upcoming scholarship program, advertising costs, and Guest Picker guarantees, In lieu of imposing formal annual club dues (fearing the loss of the majority of our informal membership) we were hoping that enough of you appreciated what we are attempting to do with the club and wouldn't mind, periodically, making a small donation to not only pay our ingoing expenses, but to build up enough of a treasury to be able to attract the very best guitar talent to come be our Guest Pickers. Especially you folks that like what we are doing, but don't attend that many Pickin' Parties - if at all. Much appreciated...
GuitarPlayer TV - a whole lot of videos of guitar related things sponsored by GuitarPlayer Magazine - it's got a very short video advertisement in front of everything you want to see - but, little incontinence compared to all you get to enjoy. . (Do yourselves a favor and click on "Artist Features" and then look at ALL of Joscho Stephan's videos - this kid just keeps getting better and better. Then, click on Thom Bresh - Merle Travis' son... he's incredible, too. YouTube - This is that internet company that 3 young men just sold to Google for $1.4 BILLION BUCKS!! However, it's jam full of some GREAT old footage of Chet, Merle, & Jerry... and, many of our contemporary guitar "stars", as well: Tommy Emmanuel, Doyle Dykes, Richard Smith, Thom Bresh, etc. Even a tune from our Kenny Poole "deep end of the poole" DVD.. Just type whoever you are looking for into their Search function - and, bingo you'll be watching some great guitar footage... Keep on
